ABOUT
Hi! I’m Riana, the owner of Riana van Wyk Biokinetics.
I graduated with a BSc Hons in Biokinetics and an undergraduate degree in Human movement science and nutrition in 2006. I have extensive experience in hydrotherapy and land based therapy which I compliment with additional qualifications in taping, massage, orthopaedic and neurological rehabilitation.
My practice was founded in 2014 to better enable me to look after you. Riana van Wyk Biokinetics offer you more than 10 years’ experience with qualifications in Advanced International Aquatic Therapy, certified watsu practitioner and interdisciplinary pain management. I live with a chronic condition myself and therefore understand how a chronic disease or disability impacts on your daily activity, life roles and quality of life. I have walked a difficult but enriching journey over the last 7 years and can attest that I can empower you to become the best you can be. I enjoy working with special populations including auto-immune diseases, neurological degenerative diseases, chronic pain and special populations such as geriatrics and people with disabilities. I have a postgraduate diploma in Interdisciplinary pain management.
WHAT WE DO
We use exercise as main treatment modality to assess functionality in your environment whether that includes an electrician needing to climb a ladder, a runner preparing for comrades or a patient with a movement disorder struggling to perform activity of daily living we so take for granted. In order to do this, we use the first appointment to perform an in depth clinical and scientific assessment to determine what you can and can not do including posture, flexibility and range of motion, strength and dynamic postural stability. Your assessment will be done specific to your environment and a report will be put together with feedback.
We like to stay in contact with your managing physician and other health professionals involved while maintaining patient confidentiality. From there we determine the length and amount of sessions required. We make use of land based exercise therapy, taping and hydrotherapy.
OUR TEAM
My name is Aliesha Jordaan, most of you have already met me. I am proud to say that I am the Intern Biokineticist at Riana van Wyk Biokinetics.
I just finished my Honors degree in Biokinetics at the University of Pretoria last year after studying BSport Science at Tuks as well. I come from Centurion, and if I’m being honest I felt like I am in a different country living and working in Randburg at first, but I am slowly adjusting to the Jo’burg tempo.
The internship is for one year during which time I have to gain certain ‘real-world’ practical experiences to support my academic knowledge of biokinetics. I have always had a great passion for working with people and I am truly honored to have the opportunity of helping people through my career as an aspiring biokineticist.
I look forward to learning from Riana, other biokineticists, and most of all, all of you.
My name is Bokamoso Mthimkulu, but most people call me Bokz. I started my internship in 2020 at Riana van Wyk Biokineticists. I completed my honours in Biokinetics at Wits University in 2019. I then completed a Certificate in Nutrition and Health in 2020.
Throughout my studies, I learned about orthopedic injuries and rehabilitation, chronic diseases and rehabilitation, health and wellness, special populations, and the importance of eating healthy. I have also completed courses in hydrotherapy, taping and level 2 first aid.
I am a kind, loving and understanding woman who wants nothing more but happiness and well-being for others. My love for physical activity and living a healthy life is as big as my love for knowledge on the body, how it works, and how living an active and healthy life affects it.
After being diagnosed with a neurological disease, I have developed a love for helping people with a similar diagnosis. I also enjoy helping persons with disabilities, autoimmune conditions, geriatrics, and children. My goal is to enable you to be as functional and independent as possible through strength and aerobic conditioning.
I am grateful to be a part of Riana’s team and I look forward to further expanding my knowledge this year!!
My name is Shazia Jooma and I am an aspiring Biokineticist. In 2018 I completed my undergrad in BA Sport Psychology at the University of Johannesburg. Thereafter, in 2019 I completed my Honours degree in BHSc Biokinetics at the University of Witwatersrand.
I chose Biokinetics because I am passionate about helping people and making a difference in people’s lives. I feel honoured working alongside Riana and Bokamoso to complete my internship this year as I believe that I will gain the sufficient knowledge, experience and expertise needed to be a good Biokineticist. Departing on this new journey is exciting and I honestly can’t wait to meet new people and form positive relationships. I get along well with people and I am able to work with people easily. I look forward to this year as we will learn, share and experience new and different skills and knowledge showcased by Riana, Bokamoso and myself.
